The life of materials and consumer goods is often very predictable. They’re used for their designated purpose and when they are no longer of use they’re discarded. These unloved things are the materials Phil uses for his creations. Whether it is an oil painting from an estate auction or a pewter tankard from an op shop, the journey of the item takes an unexpected and irregular diversion from its usual fate.
Phil is a Katikati local with no formal arts training. His passion is creating beauty, humour, and the unexpected from things that are no longer loved.
The Unexpected Journeys exhibition showcases the beauty and quirkiness of unconventional materials that come from Phil’s shed studio. Each piece has been thoughtfully created, painted, carved, sculpted, or even twisted into a unique artwork.
