Hamish Taylor Monochromatic Lino Artist Exhibition
January 3, 2023 @ 8:00 am - January 29, 2023 @ 5:00 pm
This striking exhibition opened its door on Monday the 2nd January and runs until the 29th January 2023 at the Carlton Gallery, Katikati.
Hamish has lived in Katikati most of his life. He went to school here and then went on to study design at Waikato Polytech, specialising in jewellery and other metal work. He then spent time as an apprentice jeweller and completed trade certificate.
Since then, Hamish has been in horticulture, but the skills he learnt earlier serve well in cutting and printing lino blocks. You can also see his work and the work of other print artists at Imprint Gallery in the Tauranga Historic Village.
Fresh Prints is a collection of monochromatic lino prints. Most people are familiar with lino printing, having made a lino print in school art class. It is a fairly simple process of carving an image into a lino slab, rolling ink on it and pressing it onto paper.
The medium’s biggest challenge is also its most distinctive feature; there is no gradient of tone,
only hard edges. There is only full colour or blank white. There are four basic elements to work with: colour, blank, line and texture.
In this exhibition Hamish used a lot of architecture as subject matter because of its hard edges and the way it casts shadow, which suits the medium.
Hamish subscribes to the ‘Bert school of art’. In the film, Mary Poppins, the character, Bert, makes chalk drawings on the pavement and sings, “I drew what I likes and I likes what I drew “.
This is an uncomplicated philosophy, art at its most basic and unpretentious level. He drew pictures of things he wanted to draw pictures of and was pleased with the result and hopes that others will like his pictures too. Like Bert, I hope you will also enjoy the work I have enjoyed producing.
