Dutch artist Peter Enter of Holland, who graduated with honours from the Art Academy of Amsterdam, created two humorous murals during the summer of 2004-2005. Both were based on local ‘legends’ with a transport theme.

This mural recalls the time when a trio of sportsmen dressed in whites (probably bowlers or cricketers), became part of a mud bath when they stopped to help a carload of ladies in distress. It was the early 1930s, the unsealed roads between Katikati and Tauranga turned to mud after rain and travel could be hazardous.

The men offered to push the car out of the water table on Turnpike Hill, Pahoia, but were covered in mud for their efforts. Katikati had no doctor in those days and a Miss Putt had offered to drive Nurse Hutch and a sick patient to Tauranga Hospital.

The story doesn’t say whether the patient survived!
